Research

Baby sleeping bags are recommended by health professionals and used by an increasing number of maternity hospitals, but some are better than others. New scientific research findings from AgResearch, New Zealand’s largest national Crown Research Institute, indicate that

"baby sleeping bags made from natural merino wool are better at maintaining a baby's comfort and wellbeing compared with synthetic fleece sleeping bags"

Key findings from the AgResearch trials:

  • Compared with a fleece sleeping bag, a merino sleeping bag has up to 80 times higher moisture vapor absorption, keeping baby dryer and more comfortable throughout the night.

  • Babies that wear merino sleeping bags are better protected from chilling.

  • Due to its natural fiber structure, babies are less likely to overheat in a merino sleeping bag compared with a fleece sleeping bag.

Scientists agree, Dr. Stewart Collie, Senior Scientist at AgResearch, concluded: “Our test results, combined with wool’s natural low flammability, its unique absorption properties and non-irritant properties all indicate that merino wool is the ideal fiber type to use in infant sleep sacks.”
